Sitting above Eagle Harbor high atop Petherick Hill stands this blue bat cage. Like its sibling down at the Seneca, this interesting structure is put atop mine shafts to allow bats easy egress but keeping everything else out. This particular cage sits atop the Copper Falls Mine, specifically one of its Ashbed shafts. While similar to the Seneca version, this particular model is much larger and is for some reason painted blue.

It’s blue because it was an old tank and is what was laying around the yard… I believe this tank had been at White Pine in its past life, which is a bit ironic.
The other nice feature about the blue body is the upside down number markings written in white on the right side of your photo. Really adds to the surreal feeling of this particular site.
Btw, did you make it a bit further down that trail to check out where the top level of the mine recently collapsed? It’s been filled in and marked with some pipes sticking out of the ground…
Steve — that spot is one of my favorites for surrealness. I was snowshoeing there just after it had collapsed, but apparently before anyone knew about it. I snowshoed in, and there was a giant hole in the middle of the trail! When I came back that summer, it was even bigger, but fenced off at least.
Steve – We got to that area you speak of and it was huge, and marked with two pipes. To think of what it looked like just after collapse… I envy Dave in being able to come across such a site. It also makes me think about all the times I’m stomping around in the woods near mines and wondering if such a thing could occur when I’m around. Its a little scary to think about actually.
Did anyone take a photo of the site of the collapse?
It would be awesome to see what it looked like or even a picture of the site after it was filled
Mark, I thought I did, but I can’t find them now! Joe may have some, if he sees this thread.
It scares me too! I’m always worried about the potential for stepping in the wrong location at the wrong time.
Sorry, no picturez of the collapse. I didn’t work on this one, but I do recognize the blue tube from the yard!
Sorry for the typo as well, I stink at typing and the English language today!
