Love this old-style stop sign found at the corner of 7th and Scott in Calumet. If you look close you’ll see others scattered about the city. I don’t know hold old these are, but they look to be built from a stamped piece of metal instead of wood like you see today. Also love how it makes sure you know why your stopping, because of a “thru street” – which is also funny considering 7th actually ends here at Scott.
This starts a new series of posts which I alluded to on Tuesday. In an attempt to provide daily posts here on CCE once again I present the Copper County Clips series. These posts will be short and sweet, only a couple of photos along with a short commentary focusing on a very specific item I’ve found during my travels.
That’s the coolest stop sign I’ve ever seen.
I’ve noticed those signs around Calumet before, but I never read the “Thru Street” part. Weird.
I should try to get a photo of the Ultimate Yooper Stop Sign I found once. I think it was up at Hungarian falls — it was your standard red stopsign, except: no white border (not optional!), it had been repeatedly shot up by shotguns and rifles, run over and bent to the ground, and then apparently set on fire.
^^ahahahahahaha set on fire, lol
mike, you shouldve taken a pic of the parking meters in Calumet that take nickels, lol! that blew my mind the first time up
You mean they don’t have those in the big city?
Its funny because everyone seems to complain about them up here too, which makes sense considering how they’re only a nickel and all. I know at Tech it was a quarter minimum… for 15 minutes no less.
BTW, we’ve just uncovered some old photos in Houghton that show that same exact style of stop sign. The pictures were from the 1930’s, so this guy’s been here a spell.
Ahhhhh, in the big city, they take credit cards even
A more modern addition to Houghton’s stop signs happened last year, when some brilliant person went around with a “HAMMER TIME” stencil and added the words below each STOP sign. Brilliant.
I’ve seen those “Hammer Time” stencils on different stop signs (not in Houghton). I’ve also seen “collaborate and listen”.
