There is an odd paradox – at least to me – in what types of buildings mine companies built with rock and which ones they built with wood. Collar Houses, Shaft Houses, Rock Houses – all of these were always built with wood. We haven’t found one yet that was built with rock or even concrete (except the base of course). Hoist buildings, however, are almost all exclusively built from poor rock. Considering that they just end up having to tear a rock wall down to remove the hoist later – it seems excessive. It also makes putting a larger engine in a bit tuff (usually requiring a brand new building). Once a shaft is dug its not going anywhere. If any building should get the rock treatment, shouldn’t it be the shaft house? Just a random thought. Now on to some more photos…

The rather grandiose entrance to the hoist building at Central #2. To think this was an industrial building serving exclusively an industrial purpose seems ludicrous – but thats what it was. There sure knew how to build them back them – the fact that these walls still stand today is a testament to that fact. To a look at the inside of this beautiful building for yourself in our Big Picture.
Enjoy.
