After walking around and snapping a few pictures in both Calumet and Houghton, I can actually say that Calumet is starting to look a lot better then Houghton in terms of building facades. Lots of work has gone on as of late in Calumet, and it shows. Houghton, however, really shows its age when viewed up close. This may soon change however.

Recently Houghton has begun to remedy years of neglect with a new push for downtown rehabilitation. It started with the removal of the covered roadway on Huron Street (which will hardly be missed by anyone) and seems to be on schedule to continue this summer.

An interesting read relating to these possible improvements is a Houghton Facade study done by U.P. Engineers and Architects Inc. Their powerpoint presentation can be found here (the link is a PDF file, so be warned) and paints a beautiful picture of a city that can quickly steal the spotlight from Calumet if everything goes according to plan.
